The History of Sex Toys

Sex toys are not a modern invention. Believe it or not but they’ve actually been enjoyed since around 300-400 BC by the ancient Greeks! Back then, dildos were called Olisbos and were traded from the Greek port of Miletus.

It wasn’t until the mid 19th century that sex toys, in particular butt plugs, vibrators and rubber dildos, started to be developed into more purposeful products. During this period, doctors actually prescribed to women to treat “hysteria”, with symptoms of “pelvic heaviness” and “vaginal anxiety”... err, yeah right ladies, nowadays it’s just called wanting to “get some”.

Towards the end of the 19th century, the first battery operated electric vibrator was born. It was actually developed by a British doctor to treat female “hysteria”.

By the end of the First World War, the popularity awareness of these of sex toys had increased. Magazine adverts starting appearing, encouraging the use of electric vibrators and rubber dildos at home, for the self-treatment of hysteria. In fact, in 1921 adverts started to appear encouraging men to purchase the products for their wives, because it kept them “young and pretty”.

Blue movies of the 1920s demonstrated vibrators and dildos as tools for sexual stimulation, and so the camouflage was lifted and the taboo created. By 1930, they were openly advertised to anyone who wanted one.

Alfred Kinsey’s international bestseller “Sexual Behaviour in the Human Male” (otherwise known as the Kinsey Report) published in 1948 declared that 94% of men, and 40% of the women he interviewed admitted that they masturbated to orgasm.

The frivolous 1960s were instrumental in the growth of the sex toy market. Many people could now obtain a wonderful variety of dildos, butt plugs, vibrators, lubricants, and many other sex aids through specialist shops, and through magazines.
